Mere Tragedies, Palmer’s debut chapbook, compiles intimate and daily moments that slowly wear on the individuals of the story. The pieces exist in isolation from each other to deprive the characters the pleasure of familiarity. Every aspect of the work, from content to formatting, is aware of the isolation of contemporary existence. Whether a character experiences a missed opportunity or witnesses a lovers’ spat, each vignette features a moment of recognition where reality is forced into the character’s life. The prose moves fluidly through poetic sentences to stunted staccato punches, portraying the ins and outs of daily life. In a world that is inconsistent and unreliable, the characters experience not major but mere tragedies, moments without resolution.
